As we continue to define the reasons that motivate our family, we take on new challenges. We aim to inspire our members through the experiences we ultimately share in our journey to aiding our community. December 10th 2017 Beyond Our Streets took on another project that makes clear our purpose. As our members all hold specific challenges close to them we are able to come up with ideas about what projects we would like to tackle.
Spread the Warmth was about trying to do our little part in making some of Toronto’s less fortunate a little more comfortable through this winter season. We organized ourselves into groups and walked through Toronto streets handing out bags (care packages) filled with water bottles, gloves, 2 pairs of socks, hats and hand warmers to anyone who wanted or needed some help. Figuratively and physically we spread the warmth through the material that clothed these people and by the positive energy we were able to show towards our brothers and sisters on the streets.
Fortunately for our riding crew we have many members who have worked with homeless individuals in the past, which helped us prepare for this day. We were well aware that we were not saints for doing one good deed for the day and we were attacking this day with zero expectations. We had several experiences throughout the day from people who were giving hugs and kisses to our members, to those who became increasingly upset as they told us their story and provided some background as to how they ended up in their current positions on the street.
Overall this experience serves as a lesson and a reminder about how fortunate our club is and our members are to be able to follow our passion together. This was a humbling experience for all of us to get a glimpse of how poverty affects our community. This also marks the beginning of a partnership with Human Concern International for future initiatives within our community.
